Reflection

This website was made a project for course on adulthood and aging

I am choosing option 3 which is 40 percent weightage to knowledge translation project.

The pathway I have chosen is using a website as it is accessible and collaborative in nature. I have bought the the domain (optimalaging.info) as it is easy to search making it easy to find for caregivers and anyone in need of a resource for caregiving. A website in a blog form makes it easy for comments and feedback and people could share their personal stories. Though initially I thought of this course as “just another psychology course” learning through it I realised its applications in real life and for me personally as I have couple of people in my family going through aging and me being the youngest! I drew parallels from learning from this course and thought about the actions and behaviors of older people in my household, Though many things match up some don’t and that’s a point for further research (maybe due to cultural and educational differences in my south Asian rural family ) compared to most of the research that is studied in western world. I am also pursuing a lot of computer science and technology related courses at UBC and building a website, buying and connecting a domain was a fun task for me. Researching about specifics of “A caregivers guide to optimal aging” further enhanced my knowledge about optimally aging in this course. I can assess its impact as I have the portal and statistics for this website and I would know the traffic on it . Now that this is project even after exams and grading would probably expand it by having a “Donation Link” that connects to a old credible old age home.

Some of the challenges I had were to create a concise guide which showcases information in a  manner that is easy to read but at the same time academic as it for someone who browses internet and is familiar with some key concepts about aging as the demographic for a caregiver. I could have used other more engaging form of media such as videos but there are tons of resources for the same on internet. My website is a starting point for someone familiar yet wants to dig down deep and understand aging . I also wanted to apply my learnings  about optimal aging and that could only be possible in this format. In future this website could include videos, brochures and just about anything if I find the right community and people to work with ! Those people could be a psychology student , Curious person or a professor !

Overall the Knowledge project has been a good learning opportunity for me as I put in more effort for it  than a midterm !
